The EEG and Germany's Renewable Growth
EEG (Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz) = Renewable Energy Sources Act
What it does: Guarantees fixed feed-in tariffs for renewable energy producers for 20 years → removes revenue risk → drives massive investment in solar and wind.
Germany's 2023 electricity generation mix:
- ~60% renewables (first time majority)
- Wind (onshore + offshore): largest single source (~36%)
- Solar PV: ~12%
- Hydro: ~4%
- Biomass: ~9%
- Remaining: natural gas, coal, nuclear (last plants shut down April 2023)
2024: ~62% renewable share in power sector
